Post E. Dirty Tricks In Ukraine – Play It Again Uncle Sam

‘It seems to me that I have heard that song before,
It’s from an old familiar score,
I know it well that melody.’
Popular Song 1942

As it is the view of many informed and respected observers that the current crisis has in it the seeds for a direct and armed confrontation between the USA and Russia (both nuclear powers) with all that that implies, it may be that there will be some who would be interested in an alternative timeline and perspective, and an opportunity to look behind the carefully crafted but false narrative presented by the White House and so cravenly followed by the ‘bullhorn propaganda machine’* of the western media.
Hopefully what follows will in some small part present that opportunity.
* John Kerry’s favourite phrase when referring to the Russia Today news service.

The tragic loss of MH17 and investigative developments since then are covered in a separate post.

My earlier Ukraine post covered developments only up to 24/6/14. Where any new sections have been inserted they are framed within ## at beginning and end.
Everything from 26/10/14 is new and the narrative has now been brought right up to date.

As I was reading and listening to the news from the Ukraine towards the end of 2013, long before the country erupted into extreme violence, I thought I detected the signs of something familiar in the pattern that was evolving there: the stench of something nasty in the woodshed, a faint whiff of the same pattern that we saw years ago in Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Uruguay . . .
The good old boys of the Neocon/CIA/School of Americas club playing the game they had played so well in Meso and South America (the region they contemptuously call their own backyard). De-stabilize, subvert and overthrow a legitimate government and substitute a right-wing puppet regime more amenable to American, and in the case of Ukraine, European Corporate interests – the ‘shock doctrine’ as it has been called.

‘But in Europe?’ I asked myself. ‘For the first time since Greece in 1964, and with all the risks involved?’
And so I settled down to do what so few people have the time or opportunity to do: to watch it play out in detail and have a good look behind the crude headlines, innuendo, half-truths, and downright lies to be found throughout the American media which uncritically accepts all the propaganda, rhetoric, and unsubstantiated allegations that form the diet of the State Department pronouncements and press briefings and which, by and large, is regurgitated in the echo chamber of the UK media.
As the events in Ukraine are still playing out with results that one can only guess at, these notes are still inevitably open-ended, but they might provide an informative corrective to the general impression created by the mainstream media for those who have the time and inclination to follow them through.

Notes on the Ukraine Affair

The Players:
Yanukovych – legitimate President. Democratically elected Feb 2010 in a presidential election judged free and fair by observers, and a ‘good guy’ for the West and USA until Nov 2013 when he became a ‘bad guy’ when he refused to play ball on the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement.
In much the same way Russia was ‘good Russia’ when it was weak for eight years under the Presidency of that drunken oaf Yeltsin. The years when he was serenaded by Bill Clinton on the saxophone, acceded to all that America asked of him and enriched himself at the same time as his gangster oligarch cronies plundered the assets of the state. It only became ‘bad Russia’ when it was stronger under Putin, and ceased to be quite so malleable.
Yanukovych was corrupt of course, but no more so than many of his EU or American counterparts.
Overthrown in Feb 2014 following the American instigated coup.
Victoria Nuland – Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs
Married to Robert Kagan founder of PNAC and leading advocate of the concept of American exceptionalism see:
and buddy of
John McCain – extreme neocon and rabid Russophobe.
Oleh Tyahnybok – neo-Nazi, anti-semitic Svoboda party leader who met with
both Nuland and McCain.
The Svoboda far right party (see BBC News Magazine reference below)
which has links with extreme vigilante and anti-semitic groups received at least three high level cabinet posts in the interim government including deputy prime minister.See:       and    ##  ##
Arseniy Yatsenyuk – one of the leaders of Fatherland Party and PM following the coup
Geoffrey Pyatt – US Ambassador Ukraine
Vitaly Klitschko – ex-boxer politician
Yulia Tymoshenko – Another leader of the Fatherland Party and PM of Ukraine on two occasions the last ending March 2010. In Oct 2011 she was convicted of corruption and abuse of power and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Released by her friends Feb 2014 after the ‘deselection’ of Yanukovych, she was at one time a contender for the Presidency.
She’s the darling of the West. See the BBC’s glowing profile of this ‘glamorous, fiery orator’ at:
and then listen to her in conversation with Deputy Nestor Shufrich at
in which her solution to the 8 million Russian speakers in the Eastern Ukraine is to ‘kill them with nuclear weapons,’ or to ‘take an assault rifle and shoot this scumbag in the forehead,’ or ‘look we must take up our arms and kill these goddamn Russkies and their leader.’
She has reportedly acknowledged the conversation – its authenticity has certainly not been challenged.
Very revealing of the thinking of the people who are now in charge.

Background to the Ukrainian Crisis
In flagrant violation of the Reagan-Gorbachev agreement of 1987, Washington and the European countries have systematically expanded NATO into Eastern Europe and the Baltic states and established military bases on Russia’s borders in pursuance of the old cold war policy of containment. See:                                                                                     It’s a long article, but an excellent analysis.
##There is also an informed piece in the American magazine The Nation. See:              ##                   The author is a professor emeritus at New York and Princeton Universities whose special field is Russia and the former Soviet Union.
And yet in the ‘through the looking glass world’ in which America operates its foreign policy, and enthusiastically sponsored by John McCain amongst others, we now have the US administration introducing the Russian Aggression Prevention Act of 2014. Comment at: and
This attitude evoked the little cartoon below which sets out the reality of the situation nicely.

Ukraine Timeline
A Kiev Post article entitled “Ukraine Hopes to Get $1.5 Billion from IMF in June” states that the loan is dependent on pension cuts while “maintaining cooperation with the IMF, since it influences the country’s interaction with other international financial institutions and private investors” and further that the “attraction of $850 million from the World Bank in 2011, depended on cooperation with the IMF.” See:
Well, that about says it all: if Ukraine played ball, then the loan money would pour in, subject of course to ‘cooperation’ with the IMF and World Bank with all the financial and economic subjugation that that entails. rising unemployment especially among the young, cuts to pensions, increased homelessness, wages stagnating or cut, public expenditure especially on social services savaged, a general mood of insecurity and hopelessness in a newly created strata of urban poor. Ask the people of Greece, Spain, Ireland, Portugal and considered in more detail in Post A.                                                                                              21/11/13                                                                                                                             President Yanukovych embarrasses the European Union and infuriates the US by rejecting its Agreement in favour of joining Russia’s Common Union with other Commonwealth Independent States. See:

27/11/13                                                                                                                                 Putin’s proposals for tripartite consultations between Ukraine, EU and Russia are ignored.    and

The CIA/State Department proceeds to organise its response, and put the boot in.
Following her meetings with Yanukovych and the neo-nazis who oppose him, Victoria Nuland hands out cookies to protesters on the Maidan during one of her several trips to the Ukraine. See:
She is followed by John McCain who addresses the crowd at:
##  Isn’t he a treasure?                                                                                                                      “The free world is with you, America is with you, I am with you.’                                         And he’s so full of loving self-regard he can’t see how ludicrously bathetic that final phrase is. ##

Nuland reports to the US-Ukraine Foundation on her ‘third trip in five weeks’ to the Ukraine.
As if intent on providing incontrovertible evidence of deep US involvement in Ukraine, Assistant US Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Victoria Nuland proudly told a meeting of the International Business Conference sponsored by the US-Ukrainian Foundation (and by ExonMobil and Chevron) that the US had ‘invested’ more than $5 billion and ‘five years worth of work and preparation” in achieving what she called Ukraine’s ‘European aspirations.”
(i.e. Priming the pump for the US transnational corporations to go in and plunder following the standard IMF/World Bank game plan.) See
Having boasted to her audience of her ‘coordinated high level diplomacy’ Nuland talks of more than two hours ‘tough conversation’ with Yanukovych.
Already celebrated for her abrasive tone and manner as former Secretary Clinton’s State Department Spokesperson, she lays down the law making it “absolutely clear” to Yanukovych that the US required “immediate steps” to “get back into conversation with Europe and the IMF.”
That is (to the President of a sovereign country),                                                                      you do as we tell you boy – or else.
And as the President’s loyal lieutenant she is also so well versed in all the cant, claptrap and hypocrisy that the US churns out when they are about to engage in a particularly dirty and duplicitous bit of business.
“that great country – principles and values that are corner-stones of all free democracies – justice – civil rights – a government that respects them, that listens to them, that protect them and provides for them – we stand with the people of Ukraine in their search for justice, human dignities, security, a return to economic health                                         Well Chile, Guatemala, Uruguay, Iraq etc, etc know all about those values don’t they?

While Western media have consistently portrayed Yanukovych as a ‘weak’ leader, it would seem from Nuland’s description of a ‘tough’ meeting that he in fact resisted her threats and intimidation. And then in what must have been a touching moment for her audience, Nuland refers to events on 10th Dec when in the ‘wee hours’ there was an appalling show of force by riot police using bulldozers and tear gas on Maidan demonstrators as they ‘sang hymns and prayed for peace’.                                                                                                           (In fact a pop concert continued uninterrupted on one side of the square)                                       What Nuland did not reveal on December 13 was that her meetings with ‘key Ukrainian stakeholders’ included neo-Nazi Svoboda party leader Oleh Tyahnybok and prime minister wannabe Arsenly Yatsenyuk of the Fatherland Party.                                                                          At about the same time as Nuland was wooing other fascist extremists, Sen. John McCain and Sen. Chris Murphy were sharing the stage in Kiev with Tyahnybok offering their support and opposition to the sitting government.     See:                                                          Take a look at their smiling faces as they stand at the shoulders of McCain and Nuland. Just the sort of chaps you’d like to take home for tea with mother aren’t they?

The Svoboda party which has roots with extreme vigilante and anti semitic groups was rewarded with at least three high level cabinet posts in the interim government including deputy prime minister. So we now have the progenies of west Ukraine’s historic neo-fascist thugs, the collaborators who fought and slaughtered alongside Hitler’s troops, aligned with the United States as represented by Victoria Nuland.                                           America, as ever, always very keen to support the fascist cause. (See Post A.)           22/12/13                                                                                                                                              ##  Russian proposals for a tripartite conference (Russia, Ukraine and EU) to alleviate tensions and seek out a compromise solution was accepted by Kiev but rejected by EU    and                                ##
For the first time following ten weeks of peaceful protests (and hot on the heels of the meetings of Nuland, McCain and Murphy with the fascists – coincidence?) violence erupts on the Maidan. See:
There is an interesting analysis of the descent into violence, and comment on how uncritical and undiscerning most of the media has been of the far-right parties and movements that were operating and the fact that the Americans were happy to be in bed with them at:  ##  ##
Ukraine PM resigns.
Victoria Nuland (Asst Sec State Europe) in conversation with Geoffrey Pyatt US Ambassador to the Ukraine
This is the ‘Fuck the EU’ phone call of which the expletive was just about the only element extensively reported in the Western and US Media.
It dealt with Pres Yanukovich’s offer to make Arseniy Yatsenyuk the new PM and Vitaly Klitschko deputy PM.
Nuland: I don’t think Klitschko should go into government, it’s not a good idea (She believes Yatsenyuk should d be in charge and Klitschko would not get along with him) It’s just not going to work.
Pyatt: I think we’re in play here ???. . . . Let Klitschko stay out and do his homework.

What we have here is two US officials expressing their contempt for their EU colleagues and the democratic process and strategising (‘we’re in play’) how to construct the government they want in another sovereign country once they have effected the overthrow of the legitimate one.
It’s the old game then, the one that played out so effectively in America’s ‘backyard’ south of the border.
Nuland acknowledges the accuracy of the conversation calling it ‘a neat bit of tradecraft.’

Anonymous Ukraine hackers release a series of emails from a Lithuanian government adviser to opposition leader and former boxer Vitaly Klitschko regarding plans to destabilize Ukraine; for example:
7/12/13 “Our American friends promise to pay a visit in the coming days, we may even see Nuland or someone from the Congress.”
14/12/13 “Your colleague has arrived … his services may be required even after the country is destabilized.”
9/1/14 “I think we’ve paved the way for more radical escalation of the situation. Isn’t it time to proceed with more decisive action?”
‘Radical escalation’ and ‘more decisive action’ is proposed – and just ten days later the Maidan erupted into violence. See:
The authenticity of the exchange has not been challenged.

Much had been made in the western press of the ‘Yanukovich snipers’ shooting down unarmed innocent protesters on 20/2, with graphic images of ‘peaceful protesters’ dragging themselves away from the shooting. Then on
Estonian Foreign Minister Paet who has just returned from Kiev phones Catherine Ashton re snipers in the Maidan.
He is already making the point that people in the east, seeing what is going on in Kiev are indicating that they wish for their independence too from the incoming Kiev crowd.
Paet: There is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers it was not Yanukovich, but somebody from the new coalition.
Ashton: I think we do want to investigate**. I mean, I didn’t pick that up, that’s interesting. Gosh.
(** ‘Interesting’ and ‘gosh’ This is the Baroness Ashton who is being paid an extra £400,000 over three years (see Post A.) just to continue doing her job until the end of her contracted term, and this is the best she can do when faced with evidence of precisely the sort of false flag operation that the CIA employed to such effect In . . . well I don’t need to list them do I?  And she never did do anything about an investigation.)
Paet: And second, what was quite disturbing, this same Olga [Bogomolets] told as well that all the evidence shows that the people who were killed by snipers from both sides, among policemen and then people from the streets, that they were the same snipers killing people from both sides.
Ashton: Well yeah . . . that’s terrible. (She’s so cut up about it isn’t she?)
Paet: So that she then also showed me some photos she said that as a medical doctor she can say that it is the same handwriting, the same type of bullets, and it’s really disturbing that now the new coalition . . . that they don’t want to investigate what exactly happened.

Paet also refers to an MP being beaten up in front of Parliament Buildings by the armed men on the streets.                                                                                                                   Violence, shootings, false flag operations, beating up of lawmakers, assassination of judges: all standard procedures for the far right. Employed to great effect by the Nazis in thirties – and before and since of course.   See:
The run-in contains some pretty graphic and disturbing images. If you want to dodge them the relevant exchange starts at 8.20 in.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               ## For a couple of days images of ‘peaceful’ protesters  being shot down and killed filled the TV screens and the pages of the press and there was never any doubt where to point the finger of blame.                                                                                                                                 These were Yanukovytch snipers slaughtering their fellow countrymen in a desperate bid to prop up the old corrupt regime.                                                                                                     In the event as the Paet/Ashton conversation and subsequent developments showed the truth was very different.

Following an international outcry an internal investigation was set up by the new and illegal regime, but eventually found to be so flawed that it was thoroughly rubbished by the EU Council as failing to satisfy the requirements of the European Convention on Human Rights.                                                                                                        which condemns Kiev internal ‘investigation’ alleging lack of cooperation and obstruction by the Interior Ministry                                                                                                                                                Not that the Council’s report is itself beyond criticism. See:

There had however been a second investigation in May 2014 under the supervision of Gennady Moskal, a pro-opposition M.P. who had been very critical of the Ukrainian Berkut police force and might be expected to cut them very little slack.                                 His conclusion on the specific issue raised by Paet was that the bullets found did not fit Berkut commando weapons and that the Yanukovych police were not to blame for the killings.                                                                                                                                            I have been unable to trace any reference to this in the mainstream media of the time.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Almost a year later the truth at last begins to seep out. ##  The Crimea referendum.                                                                                            Crimea: part of Russia from 1783 until transferred** to the Ukraine by Khrushchev in 1954. Over 58% ethnic Russians; over 90% using Russian as main language; an autonomous region which under the constitution of 1992 had briefly its own President and foreign policy; home of the major naval bases for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.                         ** It is maintained by many that this was done illegally and the matter is still the subject of some debate. See                                                                           and others at

The March referendum was rubbished by one side
and equally endorsed by the other
with the Kosovo unilateral declaration of independence cited in support.
Putting aside what would inevitably be a sterile debate on these issues, was the American assessment of the Geo-political implications involved so naive that they imagined the Russians would have stood idly by (with or without any action on the part of the people of Crimea) while the US-led NATO alliance took Crimea over, seized Russia’s deep water harbour for its Black See Fleet and dumped yet another hostile military base on Russia’s doorstep?
Compare the US reaction re Cuban crisis, or envisage Russia sending diplomatic representatives to destabilise Mexico and dump a hostile military base on America’s doorstep.
The stupidity of their action with its potential for utter disaster beggars belief.

At the time of the Crimea referendum much was made of what was described as a Russian ‘invasion’ of Crimea.                                                                                                    Ask then: when was that? What date and day? What evidence is there of such an invasion, and your questions will be answered by silence.                           There never was an invasion because none was needed for Russia to have troops on the ground in Crimea under an internationally recognised treaty.                                                       When the USSR came to an end Russia and Ukraine signed a lease agreement in 1991 which governed the existence of Russian military forces in Crimea. This was updated 2009 and 2011.                                                                                                                                           Under the terms of the agreement Russia was allowed to maintain up to 25,000 troops, 24 artillery systems, 132 armoured vehicles, and 22 military planes on the Crimean peninsula.

Following the American engineered coup in February 2014 constitutional authority in the Ukraine collapsed – Russia should perhaps have given Kiev a phone call before moving troops within Crimea, but at the time there was no legitimate authority in Kiev. Who was Russia to call?                                                                                                        The government in Ukraine is still illegal – those now in post represent only about 30% of the former parliament. And most of those represent ideologies we thought had gone out with the Nazis. Read their manifestos – they post in English.  They’re proud of their creed, their intolerance, their racism, but they are the creatures of the CIA and the White House and so the west never exposes them as they could.

The coup was expected to capture the whole of Ukraine – bloodlessly. It failed#, they didn’t get Crimea, and Chevron/ExonMobil co-sponsors of the International Business Conference addressed by Nuland 13/12/13 were furious because they lost the deep water reserves in the Black Sea estimated to be worth trillions of dollars, and without Crimea they couldn’t get them.                                                                                                                #Were the American intelligence assessments really so naive and inept that they seriously believed it could succeed?

American foreign policy now is driven entirely by the neocons. Their objective is hegemony and ‘full spectrum dominance’ and any state that offers resistance can expect to be trashed.  ##

Yanukovych was criticised because his police ‘roughed up people’ but when the Kiev crew turn the military on the ethnic Russians in the east there’s scarcely a word of protest, or we are told they were provoked – much as Israel is provoked by the Palestinian’s opposition to the military occupation they endure.                          And now the Kiev crew are using all the military hardware available to them killing ethnic Russians in the east. It started a day after a visit from the CIA chief.

The openly Nazi Svoboda party which was rewarded for its violent part in the coup with six major cabinet posts including security chief, sets out its programme in its party newspaper
It calls for the country’s restoration as a tactical missile and nuclear arsenal state (VII para 9) and for an ‘Appeal to the General Assembly and the UN Security Council demanding statements to evaluate the possibility of pre-emptive nuclear strikes without declaring war.’ (VII para 8).
And the neo-nazis are paying regular reconnaissance visits to nuclear power stations. See:
It also throws some interesting light on the backgrounds of those now in power in the Ukraine.

Right wing neo-nazis, criminals and murderers; these people are the sort the CIA boys from the School of the Americas are used to working with from their experience in Meso and South America. Their grandparents were men like Bandera who collaborated with the Nazis in WW2 and are lauded by the present crowd in office.
Men who alongside the Nazis took part in mass killings of civilians and punitive operations against partisans in Belarus and Ukraine.
Just the sort of chaps we’d be happy to have running ‘a tactical missile and nuclear arsenal state.’
In a surprise announcement, Putin calls for the separatists’ independence referendums to be pushed back and endorses Ukraine’s planned presidential election.
Putin orders troop withdrawals from the Ukrainian border following the ‘completion of spring military training programme.’ He also appeals for an end to military operations and violence by the Ukrainian government.
Putin says Russia will respect the results of Ukraine’s upcoming election.
Poroshenko elected President.
22/6/14                                                                                                                                                  Putin makes public announcement supporting Poroshenko’s plans for a ceasefire and calls for a ‘substantial and detailed’ dialogue between Ukraine and the pro-Russian groups. The proposal is ignored.                                                                                                                                                                 24/6/14                                                                                                                                            Putin asks the upper house to rescind its 1/3/14 resolution allowing the deployment of armed forces in the Ukraine.

Kiev’s bloody campaign against the pro-Russian east continued unabated, however, with articles and videos aplenty online for those who care to look for them while the western media looked the other way.

The following sections were written when one of my correspondents expressed the opinion:
‘Putin is a thug and is playing a nasty game there, with a band of trigger-happy thugs who brought an airliner down**, probably by mistake. You seem to think this is a delusion and other more sinister forces are work.’                                                                                          ** Covered fully in Post F.

‘Putin is a thug and playing a nasty game.’ Well perhaps he is, and if so he would have no difficulty in selecting his role model from any five or six from the post war American presidency (see Post A for their unsavoury record), so I suppose when you’re playing with the big boys of thuggery a little thuggery in return might seem appropriate, especially when America seems to be bent on the creation of a neo-Nazi puppet state on Russia’s doorstep.
I suppose too that thuggery is as thuggery does, and I’m not certain what particular Russian actions outside the Ukraine, if any, my correspondent may have had in mind. But if the Ukraine is intended, or what, in the perverse distortion of language that the Americans specialise in, is called Russian aggression, then I would say that by and large my answer is in what I have written above and that little nineteenth century refrain from La Menagerie:
“Cet animal est tres mechant: Quand on l’attaque il se defend.”

Or I might ask, vis-a-vis aggressive expansion/invasion/hegemonic intentions and the Russian/American equation:
How many interventions military or otherwise (for instance financial via the operations of the USA dominance of such financial institutions as the World Bank and the IMF) has either made in the affairs of other countries in the 25 years since the fall of the Soviet Union?                                                                                                                                                   I’m afraid I haven’t researched a detailed answer here, but I suspect there might be an imbalance.
How many military bases do each of them have beyond their own borders?                           In this case the Pentagon itself provides an answer for the US as of 2008. America has 761 active military bases world-wide in 39 countries. I haven’t researched the figures for Russia but suspect that they might be rather less.

‘A band of gun-toting thugs’ would presumably be the 8 or 9 million ethnic Russians in the East referred to so affectionately by Tymoshenko (see list of ‘players’ above). The people whose grandparents were murdered by the grandparents of the pro-Nazi Junta now installed by the Americans. The people who unsurprisingly decided to opt out of more of the same and elected to leave the Ukraine. The people against whom the Kiev regime turned the full force of the Ukrainian army and the armed thugs of Right Faction to such destructive effect that there are allegations of war crimes, and a humanitarian crisis.

It’s the old familiar story isn’t it? Wherever Uncle Sam lends a helping hand the legacy is dissention, conflict, bloodshed and impoverishment for the people at large, while a select few end up filthy rich.

But this was a democratic election US style prior to which the following had taken place:     The Party of Regions had received over 40% of the vote in 2012 elections. On 24/2/14, however, a draft bill initiating its banning was introduced in Ukraine’s parliament,                                                                                                            but was never in fact implemented as the party broke up and the final rump refused to take part in 2014 deeming the election lacking in legitimacy as the residents of the Donbass could not vote.                                                                                                                                   The Communist Party which had received 13% of the vote in 2012 was banned on 24/7/14 and its parliamentary delegation dissolved.                                                                The Russian Bloc, a minor party, was banned 13/5/14                                                            As a further measure to fix the final outcome a Lustration Bill had been signed into law by Poroshenko on 16/9/14 under which MPs who worked under Viktor Yanukovich would be forced to leave the parliament and would be permanently banned from occupying seats.

With all other lustration provisions introduced in E Europe on the transition from communism it was generally recognised that collaboration with the old regime did not constitute a crime and criminal prosecution was not proposed.                                     Uniquely the Ukrainian provision does just that – links lustration to criminal prosecution. For extended comment see:                                                                                   A series of prosecutions followed as did a spate of apparent ‘suicides’ of former supporters of Yanukovich.                                                                                                          26/1/15 Nikolai Sergienko reportedly shot himself with a hunting rifle. By and large the western media was shamefully silent on all of this or mentioned it only in passing. Not until 20/4/15 did a western newspaper have the courage to report what exactly was happening when the Italian La Repubblica ran the headline                            Political Murders in Kiev.                                                                                       and

The following is a perfect example of the idiocy of accepting any ‘information’ from Ukrainian sources:

Poroshenko – Ukraine’s ‘all-wise’ leader and strategist                                  27/4/14                                                                                                                                            From the start of 2015 all Ukrainians will have the right to visit EU countries without a visa. They can’t – the EU won’t wear it.                                                                                25/5/14                                                                                                                                 Says that his first visit as President will be Donbass, to speak with the people of Donbass. A few days later he proclaims that the Donetsk People’s Republic will be classified as a ‘terrorist organisation worldwide.’  It wasn’t.                                                                      26/5/14                                                                                                                                        “The anti-terrorist operation cannot and should not last two or three months. It should and will last hours.” This was a few weeks after sending his armed forces into the Donbass in an operation that is still ongoing 12 months later.                                                                                                                 25/9/14                                                                                                                                          ”There will be no peacekeeping contingents. He describes the defeated troops returning from his military disaster at Debaltseve as ‘returning heroes’ and of an ‘overwhelmingly successful operation’ that ‘demonstrated the strength of the Ukrainian army.’  He denies that there was any siege.                                                                                                                                                                                                     4/6/15                                                                                                                                 Poroshenko:                                                                                                                                       9,000 Russian troops are operating in Ukraine                  30/6/15                                                                                                                                   Poroshenko in interview with Corriere della Sera,                                                                     “At Putin’s orders, 200,000 troops have amassed on our territory along with an arsenal of tanks, sophisticated missile-launching systems and surface-to-air rockets. Not NATO, not the OSCE observers stationed on the border nor any surveillance or intelligence service.’                                                          How can anyone, even the Americans whose placeman he is, take this man seriously?

20/2/15 Ukraine – A 12 Month Retrospective                                                                      1 year ago what was wrong with Ukraine? It hadn’t the most efficient economy but it had some growth.        Was it run by corrupt oligarchs – yes.                                                              Then there was the USA’s orchestrated coup in February and now it’s run by another corrupt oligarch:  Poroshenko the ‘Chocolate King’ who’s on the Forbes rich list of billionaires.       But this is a western corrupt oligarch – a good oligarch.                                 And now?                                                                                                                                   15% fall in GDP                                                                                                                                                                    2%- rate of inflation has jumped to 28%                                                         The currency is in free fall                                                                                                                                                                                         The average monthly wage for workers has fallen to less than $60                                                                                                           For local comment see:                                                                                                                                     IMF ‘aid’ package requires gas price to consumers to increase by 280%      and

The UAE has no arms manufacturing industry to speak of                                                                                                                                                                                                            It is however the second largest importer of arms in the world                                                                                   with arms imported from the USA in 2013 to the value of $3,702,000,000                   2. Who pays for them? The Ukraine economy is busted (see above) and its currency reserves negligible.  Watched the 2009 documentary on Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers (Vietnam) last night, and to be fair to Nuland she is doing no more than her masters taught her. The documentary shows Eisenhower, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon all lying to the American people on matters of national importance, and on Vietnam in particular.                       The truth was revealed to America by the New York Times and the Washington Post in the days when those papers were decent independent and investigating organisations and not creatures of corporate America or, in case of the New York Times, Murdoch.                             And post-Vietnam came the lies of Reagan (contras), Clinton (never had sexual etc), Bush (Iraq and torture), and Obama “transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.”                                                                                                     This is all standard neocon strategy. Those of the right age will remember that it was the influx of US ‘advisors’ that kick-started the Vietnam war.                                                                                           and                                                                   17/4/16                                                                                                                                         In Ukraine the Rada in a shameful and cynical act ‘commemorates’ the 70th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust and ‘honours’ its dead by extending official recognition to Ukrainian fascists who collaborated with the Nazis in killing Jews.              22/4/15                                                                                                                                 Roland Freudenstein picks up the baton from Breedlove and Scale (see above) in the European Parliament.                                                                                                                      “We have to make clear that yes, we are willing to go to war, for what we consider existential principles* of Europe’s future,”                                                                                                                                    * Which are what I wonder . . . Indeed having regard to Nuland’s dirty hands in the whole Ukrainian affair the European signatories must be viewing her interference with less than enthusiasm.                                                   19/5/15                                                                                                                                        And promptly, on cue, Poroshenko talks of fighting a ‘real war’ with Russia.                                                              21/5/15                                                                                                                                   Poroshenko reneges on pledge to uphold the Human Rights Covention.                                                         21/5/15                                                                                                                                     Kiev: Arrests and clashes with police in Kiev, as hundreds protest over the economic hardship, imposed austerity  and imploding economy.                                                             Currency has dropped 60% against the dollar.                                                                           Inflation is rocketing and rising by 60% year on year.                                                            State spending is down by 17%                                                                                                         At the Eastern Partnership summit with the EU in Riga despite Poroshenko’s smiles he is given the brush-off by the EU as far as any closer involvement is concerned.    and                                                               30/5/15                                                                                                                                   Mikheil Saashkavili appointed Governor of Odessa oblast. (Pop 2.4M inc 0.5M ethnic Russians). Saakashvili former President of Georgia is now on the run from his native Georgia where he is wanted on multiple criminal charges (which he denies of course) and assumed Ukrainian citizenship to avoid extradition home.                                                                   It was Saakashvili as President who launched the unprovoked and savage attack on the civilian population of Tskhinvali  capital of South Ossetia and the Russian peacekeepers that were in place there. An attack that led directly to the brief war with Russia.                           Saakashvili’s lies that it was Russia who started the conflict were eagerly accepted initially by the American media who all ran stories of ‘Russian aggression’ (sound familiar?), but were all unequivocally scotched by the EU commissioned report that appeared a year later and delivered a damning indictment of Saakashvili.                             A detailed examination of his record as President of Georgia can be found at                                                                        As he is a US stooge on the American payroll (see Post G) and has a rabid hatred of Russia he would seem to have all the qualifications required to be Governor in this most sensitive of areas.

3/6/15                                                                                                                                       OSCE observers on the ground in Ukraine report multiple violations of the cease fire by both sides.                                                                                                                                                 At the White House Press Briefing Ms Harf gives another fine display of obfuscation and evasiveness. Despite clear evidence in the OSCE reports (they are available online) she simply cannot bring herself to admit that there are just as many violations by the Kiev forces as by the separatists.                                           From 26.30 onwards                                                       6/6/15                                                                                                                                       Thousands march peacefully in Kiev calling for Poroshenko and his government to resign.

On the rally 6/6/15 above the western mainstream media (MSM) appears to have been completely silent. That of the 3/7/15 gets a mention in the BBC’s Europe News page online, but nowhere else.

Indeed of many of the references above you’ll find little or no mention in the MSM, indeed for a confrontation that is described as presenting an existential threat to the West the Ukraine conflict must be setting a record in the MSM for the most heavily censored of any post-WW2 conflict, or where there is reporting for the most grossly biased and distorted.

In particular there appears not to have been anywhere in the MSM one serious, extended and detailed examination and exposure of the Kiev regime’s fascist, neo-Nazi affiliations and of the ultra-nationalist groups that do its dirty work at the sharp end.                               The thugs of the Right Sector, and the Azov Battalion who threaten, assault and murder with Kiev’s approval. The criminals behind the Odessa massacre. The men who march in night-time torch-lit rallies to celebrate the lives of Bandera and men like him who in WW2 were pro-Nazi collaborators, the men who pay tribute to the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) who in WW2 collaborated with the Nazis in the Lviv and other pogroms.

Browse through the video selection of their activities below, culled at random from the internet. Switch them from colour to black and white and add the Horst Wessel song and you have Nazi Germany in the early thirties, and now as then most of the MSM holds its nose and looks the other way.                                                                                                         14/10/14                                                                                                                                   Thousands of UPA# supporters take to the streets. 21/7/15                                                                                                                                      Kiev: Thousands of ultranationalists and Right Sector hold a mass rally and protest on the Maidan, waving the red and black flags of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (the UPA – see above).                                                                                                                                                     The rally marked a ‘new stage in the Ukrainian revolution,’ said the extremists’ leader Dmitry Yarosh (see 27/3/15 above) announcing the introduction of a referendum to dissolve the current Ukrainian government and parliament, cancel the Minsk peace agreements, legalise volunteer battalions, and calling for the resignation of Ukraine’s Interior Minister Arsen Avakov.                                                                                                           In the UK mainstream media the event was marked by a deafening silence.##   At 23/7/15 not a passing word from the BBC and nothing from Guardian, Independent, Telegraph etc. No Nuland, no John McCain, no Chris Murphy to offer their support this time, and no cookies for the protesters.

Yarosh and his neo-Nazi thugs are the ones who were at the heart of all the violence in the last year’s Maidan riots. Not quite the image of America’s fledgling ‘Democracy,’ that they wish to have exposed to the world and so the event is dutifully ignored by the western media, as have so many of the Right Sector’s activities: just as the White House would wish.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               There are many more reports online.                                                                                                    ##  29/7/15                                                                                                                                       A Reuters Special Report goes some way towards presenting affairs in the Ukraine for the shambles that they are with some revealing images in its photo album at the top of the page.                                                                                                                                                                                                           It will be interesting to see whether any of the MSM decide to take this up.

12/8/15                                                                                                                                          All credit to the Daily Mail then for exposing (if only on line) the camps in which the Neo-Nazi Azov battalion indoctrinate children, some as young as six, and train them in the use of firearms.
