Russia Invades Ukraine Again, & Again & Again . . . A Survey of the Best Creative Fiction Of the Past Twelve Months
Should there be any of the media faithful who are firmly convinced that the reports detailed below are anything other than journalistic, propagandising claptrap, then there’s a case of a dozen bottles of fine New Zealand wine on offer to the first who can provide correct answers to three questions. 1. On what exact date did the invasion take place? 2. Where did the invading forces cross the border? 3. What hard evidence (as opposed to anecdotal evidence, social media chatter or unverified official assertions) is there of Russian troops or military hardware on the ground in Ukraine at the time? Provide links to the evidence. Give name, address and answers in the comments box.
Just a Few of the Many 5/7/14 Economist ‘Russia has in effect already invaded eastern Ukraine. 20/7/14 Financial Times ‘Senior alliance figures had calculated that Moscow had plans and forces in place to mount a full-scale invasion of the region now held by the separatists. The question was when?’ 21/8/14 Kiev Ukraine News (posted 31/8/14) ‘Putin launched an overt (if relatively small-scale) invasion of eastern Ukraine sometime around August 21, sending in tanks, mobile artillery, and at least 1,000 troops.’ 28/8/14 The Guardian ‘Russian forces have effectively invaded and annexed eastern Ukraine’ BBC “Russian troops ‘inside Ukraine’” 30/8/14 Telegraph ‘Russia’s invasion of east Ukraine is at a ‘point of no return’ and risks a ‘state of war’ with Europe’ In the month of August there are in fact so many media outlets singing from the same song sheet without a decent investigative journalist seeking to establish whether any of this guff is true, that they are far too many to list. 2/9/14 Spiegel Online International ‘Putin’s covert invasion of eastern Ukraine’ 3/9/14 Channel 4 News ‘Ukraine crisis: echoes of 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia?’ 6/9/14 The Economist ‘Now willing to use Russian troops more or less openly in eastern Ukraine’ 3/10/14 Atlantic Council ‘Can US support for Ukraine help prevent a new Russian invasion’ Wow, does that mean the old one is over already? 30/10/14 The XX Committee* ‘Poland prepares for a Russian invasion’ http://20committee.com/2014/10/30/poland-prepares-for-russian-invasion/ *Included only as an example of the rubbish chatter that goes the rounds on the internet. 7/11/14 Independent ‘Ukraine crisis: Kiev accuses Russia of military invasion after ‘tanks cross border’ 7/11/14 Sky News ‘Russia sends dozens of tanks into Ukraine’ ‘The convoy of 32 tanks, 16 howitzer cannons and 30 trucks of troops and equipment crossed the border into the rebel-controlled Luhansk region’ So very specific . . . You have to read a long way down to discover that as the Independent states none of this is independently confirmed 12/11/14 BBC News ‘Ukraine crisis: Russian troops crossed border, NATO says’ 13/11/14 ABC News (Australian News Channel) “Russian tanks in Ukraine but US won’t say ‘invasion’” ‘Thousands of Russian troops have crossed into eastern Ukraine in recent days, along with columns of tanks, artillery and air-defense systems, according to NATO’s top commander.’ 21/1/15 BBC News Ukraine’s president, Petro Poroshenko, told the World Economic Forum in Davos Russia has more than 9,000 soldiers and 500 tanks, heavy artillery and armoured personnel carriers in eastern Ukraine. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/21/us-ukraine-crisis-davos-poroshenko-idUSKBN0KU1TX20150121 and http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-30913027 7/2/15 Poroshenko’s ‘evidence’ of Russian invasion – a handful of passports http://news.yahoo.com/ukraine-leader-shows-off-captured-russian-military-ids-160048355.html 14/2/15 Washington neo-cons grasp at any evidence in efforts to justify sending military aid to Kiev. They enthusiastically accept evidence, indeed they “thoroughly check” their sources before releasing as ‘evidence’ photographs which were almost immediately demonstrated to be fakes. http://rt.com/news/232067-fake-photos-russian-army/ or, if you’re distrustful of ‘RT propaganda’ try the lighter touch from an American liberal/progressive political commentary programme at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMfiKJ-YCxY plus http://freebeacon.com/national-security/exclusive-photos-show-russian-military-in-ukraine-arming-separatists/ Just as deliberately falsified as Colin Powell’s ‘evidence before the UN pre-Iraq’ and in the hands of a pro-war neocon like Inhofe just as likely to lead to a US Russian confrontation, yet at midday on 14/2 I could not find any online indications that the BBC or any of the UK media thought this example of US duplicity worthy of attention. The internet had a little fun though:
14/2/15 Geoffrey Pyatt (he of the ‘Fuck the EU’ telephone conversation with Nuland) ‘confident’ that he has evidence of Russian forces in Ukraine posts satellite images on his twitter account which are immediately derided as being no more than dark patches. http://rt.com/news/232391-military-twitter-russia-ukraine/ The same Geoffrey Pyatt that last year was caught posting fake photographs on his twitter account http://rt.com/news/187992-ukraine-drills-pyatt-fail/ 15/2/15 And the western media (The Guardian and On Demand News an ITN affiliate) shows itself just as eager to falsify the narrative with video footage twisted and corrupted to fit the White House narrative of the separatists as the aggressors. Footage of government forces shelling a soup kitchen was misrepresented by both sources as coming from rebel forces when Patrick Lancaster, the photojournalist who made the original video, confirms that in fact it shows Ukrainian forces shelling the separatist civilian population, and that one of the women in the video can be heard cursing Poroshenko. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FsNdpTE-tw
